For many, an apprenticeship is the best way to enter the workforce with the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ve received the right on-the-job training to succeed. You’ve begun shopping around for the
necessary tools and equipment and are excited to begin the journey that will end in a lucrative career as an electrician.

However, no matter how prepared you are for your apprenticeship or interview, chances are you will be surprised by the challenges you will face. Help improve your chances of succeeding at both the interview and the apprenticeship by following these simple dos and don’ts.

Do Learn How to Nail the Interview

The first step to landing your electrician apprenticeship is to ace the interview. Like with any other job interview, you should dress professionally, be on time, and answer questions honestly. Here are a few additional tips to help you stand out during your apprenticeship interview:

  • Learn about the company. Prior to your apprenticeship interview, learn as much as you can about the company. Don’t be afraid to share your knowledge. Doing so will let the interviewer know you are
enthusiastic about the company and apprenticeship.
  • Follow basic interview etiquette. From waiting to sit down until the interviewer offers you a chair to maintaining eye contact and smiling, you should follow basic interview etiquette.
  • Ask thoughtful questions. Asking smart and thoughtful questions lets the interviewer know you are serious. Additionally, questions can help you determine whether you will be a good fit for the apprenticeship and the company.

Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up and Ask Questions

You aced the interview, and now it’s time for you to begin your apprenticeship. Chances are, even if you are knowledgeable or have past experience as an electrician, there will still be a lot of information you don’t know.

Never be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they are rudimentary or that you should already have the knowledge. Your fellow students will also learn from your questions, and the contractor will take notice
of your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Do Go the Extra Mile

Becoming a journeyman electrician is a long and satisfying process, and you will meet several other professionals along the way. In addition to performing your tasks as an apprentice, don’t hesitate to take on some extra work.

For example, if your boss needs someone to stay late and help on a particular job, make sure to be the first to volunteer. If you’re handy with social media or website design and the company you work for is looking for ways to make their brand more popular, don’t hesitate to offer your services.

Remember, becoming a journeyman apprentice means that you are not only getting a job but also becoming a member of a company. The more you offer your services, the more successful you and the company will become.

Don’t Waste Any Opportunities

Finally, while you learn how to become a professional electrician, you will also meet several new people while on the job and in the office. These contacts could provide you with opportunities in the future, so make sure to take every opportunity to meet new people.

Once you’ve graduated from your apprenticeship and have the opportunity to become a professional journeyman electrician, your contacts can help you find your first job or maybe even start your own small
business.

Starting an electrician apprenticeship program is a great way to enter a thriving and growing field. If you’re considering seeking an apprenticeship or simply have more questions about the field, don’t hesitate to
contact the professionals at the Independent Electrical Contractors of Greater Cincinnati.
